Hello Everyone!
I’m writing this message from San Jose, California. A great friend of mine Tibor Gecsek visited me last week to cheer me up in training here. I got acquainted with him in 1990, when I was a 1st grader of High School and we have been friends since then.
Hungarian has a lot of words that have similar meanings or pronunciations to Japanese. It is amazing! Today, I’m introducing some of them.
| Hungarian |
Pronunciation in Hun |
Japanese (meaning in Eng) |
| SO |
show |
Shio (salt) |
| Sot ra |
showt ra |
Shio wo furikakeru (to sprinkle salt) |
| Idd Ki |
idd key |
Ikki (to drink in a gulp) |
| Viz |
veez |
Mizu (water) |
| Has |
hosh |
Hara (belly) |
| Hat |
hot |
Koshi (lower back) |
The meaning of Sot ra is to sprinkle salt and you could think this way, “Shio ga tarinai kara furikakeru (Sprinkle salt because it needs more salt) ” which could be abbreviated “Shio Taran”, (which is colloquial Japanese for ‘there isn’t enough salt’). “Has” and “Hat sound similar, Japanese “Hara (belly in Eng)” is “Hosi” in Hungarian and Japanese “Koshi (lower back in Eng)” is “hat” in Hungarian. These meanings are reversed.
Take care!
